Today I did my normal walking route and with my camera in my hand I took a few pictures along the way. The area I live in is called the Emmental and its known for its people, its cheese and its hilly landscape. It has many famers, cows and as you would expect unique cheese factories.

The above pic is a typical farmhouse in the Emmental and in the winter months the cows will be in a special space below the living areas.

The above pic is just behind the farmhouse as I start to go ...

Thun is one of those really special places in Switzerland to visit. One can think of it as the gateway to many well known spots and many very special photographic friendly spots. Special about Thun itself is the river plus the lakes that is part of this small city. That presents so many opportunities to the photographer.

In the above picture you see part of the city Thun plus one can see the caste at the back.

Here you have a view from the caste back onto the Thun Lake. In this ...

Out on our weekend walks we have been watching a goose on her nest near a small pond.

We were watching her for a few minutes when all of a sudden two duck heads popped up out of the grass.

They have built their nests within a few feet of each other.

The ducks disappeared in the grass so I got myself setup, G9 braced on the fence, 24x digital zoom, high ISO, then pulled out my duck call and blew a couple of soft "quacks".

The duck heads lifted right up.

I was able ...

For about the past month we have had some unusual and uncommon weather. A couple of weeks before Christmas we got colder than normal. This was followed by heavy snow which stayed around for over a week. Normal for us is brief wet snowstorms that last a couple of days. Well this time we got loads more snow in the city areas and very heavy snow in the Cascade Mountains. Just last week temperatures climbed higher than normal with freezing levels up over 7000’. This was then followed by intense ...

Thursday night a good snowstorm hit Seattle. This after a couple of days of cold weather and snow all around Seattle, caused a massive traffic snarl. Every weekend we walk at a local park (see my Sammamish Slough post). It has an assortment of fowl….mostly ducks and geese but for some reason it has a resident population of chickens too. This fellow is quite friendly and nearly always runs down the trail to greet us….the fact we have a bag full of cracked corn and bread chunks likely has nothing to do with his excitement in seeing us though.

Fall in Seattle is a wealth of color….mostly yellows browns and some reds contrasting with wide expanses of greens from conifers and shrubs. We do not have the expansive hardwood forests of the Eastern Coast of the United States, but the mixture of Alder, Big Leaf Maple and Vine Maple with Cedar and Fir makes for a visual treat.

One of the primary reasons I love my G9 so much is the ability to capture images easily and quickly on projects that I really like doing with the intent of later putting together a story.

In this instance I captured a series of shots over about 2 months attempting to document putting a handle on a woodworking tool. I am not so much worried about the technical aspects of the images (as can be seen from the color cast of those taken in my garage) but am concerned with clarity of the technique ...

Mt Rainer is the second highest peak in the lower 48 states in the US. It has 26 named glaciers...more than any other peak in the lower 48. It is only 2.5 hours away from Seattle and its beauty is balanced with its potential to wipe Seattle off the map with an eruption resulting ...

Site of the Lewis and Clark Winter Encampment 1805-1806

Just outside of Astoria Oregon

First off I am a sucker for National Historic Parks. This is a particularly good one in my view. It is a small park located on the Lewis and Clark River just South of Astoria Oregon. The whole region from Seaside Oregon North into Washington has scattered parks and memorials to this expedition.

Since many members here may not be familiar ...
