G7 has a new bag

Post by Simon.fairclough on Mon 6 Apr - 16:53:14

I have been looking for a way to carry less gear when I am out shooting.
All the bags I have seen are OK, very expensive or are just too specialised. You can get cases and bags for DSLRs P&S that do just that carry a DSLR or a P&S and cost about $20. Then you move up to a camera bag/rucksack/backpack and I have a couple of these. they are fine but I always end-up packing them full of lenses, so they become very heavy.
This weekend I went out to see what was in the shops that might be better than the above.
I found something that was quite interesting the Think Tank system, Ken Rockwell has written recently about them and loves them. It's a good idea but still far too much stuff to carry all I need is one bag too fit a P&S or a spare lens for the DSLR.
Think Tank are very well made and I am sure they are worth the money if you are a pro with loads of gear. They have a belt system that has a belt and bags that attach to it. It was while looking at this that I came up with a good idea, what I need is a bag that will clip on to my trouser belt that I can just 'drop' a P&S or lens into. I remembered that I used to use a small bag just like one of the Think Tank bags for the belt, I used it for tape and markers when I worked in television studios.
Climbers need to keep their hands dry and use chalk which they carry in a chalk bag, these were just perfect for my use.
I went to a climbing shop and bought the cheapest one £8 a third of the price of the think tank version.
The inside is a fleecy material great for cameras in fact better than most camera bags, it clips to a belt and has a draw string to keep the camera/lens safe, the top has a wire that holds its shape so I can just drop the lens into the bag without opening a catch or buckle.

I have to now find a slightly bigger one that will hold a longer lens.
