Upgraded old PC to Vista....

Post by Siegfried on Sat 10 Oct - 22:46:34

I do not know if its such a great idea but yes I did it.... Remember a while back I indicated that I am thinking doing something with my desktop. Well I was lucky to get hold of a Vista Home copy at a really good price and I took it.

This weekend I took an old 80GB SATA HD I had in my box and started installing Vista. Make no mistake it was a loooooong job and the updates plus drivers update did take a really long time. At one stage I though....no I will not make it....

Its running now and guys my PC is like new. It runs much better, the rating Vista gave my PC after a lot of tuning and changing of old parts I have in my box is a healthy 3,8. With that sort of rating I can start taking advantage of the great multimedia functions in Vista and I will....

Well this detour took me away from the new site.....will get back to it this week....

That's interesting. I am still running XP Pro because I was never impressed with Vista. But am seriously considering going to Windows 7 based on what I have read of it's improvements (both speed and stability wise) over the initial release of Vista. Also, I don't like being two generations behind in the operating system - but I will have to do a total format and re-install of everything. (Actually not such a bad idea - gets rid of all the stuff you don't need clogging up your system.)

Doing a pc over after 2 - 3 years is always a good idea. It cleans up the registry plus it makes you think about your system requirements again.

I read that XP will have a limited support life after Windows 7 is released, which will force many of us to upgrade. To date I have been very happy with Vista, got the copy at a good price and it seems to work.

I still have xp on the old HD and right now that is what's running. I therefore can easily test the speed between the two and Vista wins hands down....Wonder what benefits the new will bring.

For example the graphics card was a great way of optimizing my pc using Vista

I only upgrade when I get a new computer but I feel the need right now, 14bit files from the D700 are slow to open in PSE6.
I must think about a new computer but I feel a Mac coming on rather than a PC windows 7 will it work won't work.
BTW PCs are fine by me I just thing for my needs a Mac is better suited.

No I can't think it would be faster than pse6 on XP but at a guess it would be faster than pse7 on vista which I hear is quite slow, against pse6/XP.
But all these things depend on other variables like processor, hard drive and RAM.
One of the up-dates in 8 is a speed boost over 7.
