Initial Impressions of the (yes it has no OVF) Olympus Pen EP-1
I just picked up the EP1 this afternoon at Adorama in NYC. (Had to also walk to Willoughby's about 15 blocks away to get the 4/3 lens adapter because Adorama did not get theirs in yet and Willoughby's had one left.)
Initial Impressions:
(1) When I took the camera out of the box I said "Wow - this is heavier than I expected". However, after walking around with it for about an hour later on I realized how much lighter it was than even the E420 that I had. Build quality of the body is great - very nice feel, all the buttons in good places. Had no problems with the LCD - though I will admit that I was not in the brightest sun. The Live functions (similar to most P&S cameras was implemented nice as it does not block the entire view like the Super Menu does.
(2) Only got the 14-42 kit lens. Like the way it collapses and for something that is probably all plastic, it does not feel shabby at all.
(3) Will definitely be picking up the 17mm Pancake when it becomes available. I have the 25mm pancake, but when you add the 4/3 lens adapter, it is almost as big as the collapsed 14-42 - sort of negates the idea of a small pancake lens.
(4) Impressed that Olympus was able to get all the 4/3 lenses to autofocus on the EP1 - even the ones that won't do CDAF. Though, the focusing on the non-CDAF lens that I still have (the old 40-150) is much slower and clunkier. The 4/3 lenses that can do CDAF (I have the 25mm, new 40-150 and the 14-54 MKII) all focus very quickly, though probably a slight bit slower than the m4/3 14-42. (Have not tried the TC1.4 or the EX-25 yet.)
(5) Did not get the new flash. I have the FL20 and it works fine, though I would like to see a direct comparison between it's results and the new flash - so purchasing of the new one is still up in the air.
(6) Can only view the ORF files in Olympus Master (which I am not really fond of - come on Adobe.....) but so far I am very impressed with the resulting images. Have not done any direct comparisons to my other Oly camera (E30) but the pictures that I really looked at were MUCH better (especially as the ISO went to 400 and above) than the last P&S that I had (Canon G7). Colors were beautiful.
Whew - that all for now. And so far I am a VERY HAPPY CAMPER!!! Will try to post some pics tomorrow.
Regards,
Steve

You one lucky fella.
I wish...
Even with my thoughts on a non viewfinder camera I think this is the nicest piece of kit for a long, while a new camera form Oly should be shouting louder!
I hope Nikon takes note and brings out a copy, cause I don't want to change lenses again still have a couple of Oly lenses from my OM days.

Hi Simon,
Well.....there is an adapter coming out to use the old Oly OM lenses on the m4/3 camera.......
And I am sure that if the camera does reasonably well the other major players (especially Canon who has so much invested in the P&S market) will take notice and bring out their own version.
