New technique to expose....

Post by Siegfried on Wed 25 Jun - 20:41:02

When you use the normal ESP or the Evaluative type exposure measurement on your camera then the camera will expose in such a way that one will not have clipping on the highlights.

As you know when the camera clip then the picture info will go either white or black depending if its highlight or dark area clipping.

In one of the exposure articles I wrote I said one should take a exposure reading pointing the cam up, then straight forward and last pointing down a little (Example was a stadion). That will help to decide on the best exposure reading and the goal typically is to reduce bright area clipping. The result is good clean highlights but the dark areas can clip or noise will increase in those areas.

The new technique is to expose to the right people say. That means one will try to move the histogram as much as possible to the right without clipping. One could even decide to clip a little to allow better shadow detail. With the new E-420 or the E-520 a technology like SAT will assist even more.

What do you think?

I agree with this but would add that you need to pick your battles, by this I mean, if you have a lot of sky in the frame, best not to let it clip and lose all detail in clouds which is so easy to do, much better to allow the shadows to block up and recover in post if needed.
Maybe sensors will allow better range soon? I think Camera companies have this one up their sleaves to part us from our money in future. Very Happy Rolling Eyes

I agree with Simon that you have to decide what is the most important detail in the picture - in the highlights, shadows or mid-tones - and expose for that. Newer cameras are getting better at holding both ends - as you refered to the SAT on the newer Oly cameras, other companies probably have something similar. There are also people who use the Oly cameras and prefer not to let the camera develop the picture using the SAT settings, but do it themselves afterwards. This does allow more control over the process. Also the only RAW developer that pays attention to the SAT and noise settings in-camera are the two Oly software packages (Viewer and Studio). Anything else (at least as of now) will not.

You guys have to wait a while

I lost the article......will find it and then I can show you some really interesting info....

But as you guys said...interesting subject and worth practicing or trying to perfect.....I think one get the best "quality" info when the pic was "correctly" exposed the first time....remember we use to do it with the G7 when the reviewers complained about noise....
