Settings for photographing snow scenes with G7

Post by josieann on Tue 2 Dec - 22:43:13

I'm spending Christmas in Yosemite National Park, staying in the valley with stream, falls, surrounding mountains, etc. I'll also be shooting in dark interiors (19th C rustic hotel with dark wood walls, beams and ceiling). What settings should I try?

Also, if I set the G7 to bracket, does it take three shots automatically, or just how does that work? I can't quite figure it out from Sigfried's book.

The Bracket function takes three shots 1 on the money, 1 under, 1 over and in that order. you set the camera to bracket and it takes three shots so hold it still for the three.

Remember this; your camera is stupid and it wants to make every picture a nice grey colour because thats the average.
Its your job as the smart photographer to stop it making the photo grey.
So if its a all white scene like snow the camera will underexpose to make it grey so you need to set some + compensation.
You will also notice that the snow will be a bit blue so you might also look at white balance.
Before you go please have a look at my Ansel Adams video on youtube.

As for the interiors get yourself a big flashgun I use a nikon sb-24 (you can get these on ebay real cheap) on my g7 it works great in the flash auto setting but of course if you want full auto you need a new canon flash.
Good luck and please post some shots when you can.
